José María Cano, under the artistic name of Cano de Andrés , came late to the field of plastic arts . His works are mainly based on the techniques known as “encáustica”, using wax as agglutinating agent of pigments. The themes for his works are diverse, ranging from violation of human rights, prostitution, banking world, to the children’s paintings of his son Dani.
Through his works, Cano shows his reflections about the world, the power, the economy, the market, the artistic creation, mental processes and the development of ideas.
Cano argues that “the economic fact in the arts ‘world is evident, but is not mentioned by artists nor gallerists (...) I embellish that cynicism provoking the power of money in my works”. Apart from newspapers ‘ pages of economy, he uses outstanding events in the news and photos found in magazines, first pages of the world press, paintings and worlds of Dani (his son), cut-outs, frames of the comic strips such as El Capitán Trueno or Tintin, prostitution’ s advertis ements in the Spanish press, etc.
